Age: 12
Current Band: The Scots School Albury Pipe Band
DM: How long have you been playing the Scottish snare drum?
MONTE: I began learning snare drumming when I was 5 years old in my kindergarten class. I am very lucky to go to a school that had a pipe band. I’ve been playing now for 7 years!
DM: Why did you take it up?
MONTE: I just wanted to drum! It’s fun and a great environment.
DM: Why do you keep it up?
MONTE: You have to work hard and practice a lot but there are good results for the effort. It can be really cool with drum salutes, such as the ones Drumworx plays. I love learning new and harder tunes. It is also a great way to meet people and travel the world. Bust most of for the fun and joy of it!
DM: Do you play competitively with your band and/or in solos?
MONTE: My band competes in Grade 4 and Juvenile. I also play in as many solos as I can get to in D Grade. My school band are the current South East Asia champions. I am the current Australian D-Grade Solo Snare Champion which was great to win after a lot of hard work and practice!
DM: What is it that you love most about pipe bands?
MONTE: You get to travel all around the world, meet new people, be on stage in concerts, make heaps of friends. It’s just great!
DM: What are your future pipe band drumming goals?
MONTE: I would love to be in a drum corp at the world pipe band championships with an A-Grade band like Shotts and Dykehead or Maybe Feild Marshal Montgomery. But my number one goal is to be the world champion A-grade snare drummer!
We are super excited to have Cameron and Monte on board with us as DrummingMad Bloggers and look forward to following their journey through the world of pipe band snare drumming!
