Something Old Something New, affectionately known as SOSN, is a one of a kind “training course drumming book” for Pipe Band Snare Drummers with a super concept. It is the only book in the world where the scores have all been written to three different difficulty levels.
It all started back in the mid 1970’s when Tom Brown started building his future legendary world champion Boghall and Bathgate Caledonian Pipe Band Drum Corps. He had taught a number of youngsters but after the band was promoted to grade two, the step up from grade four for any new players was too great to make in a single leap. So Tom devised this ingenious system of developmental stages. Because he was the composer of all the drum scores for the whole band including his development band, he was able to do something revolutionary.
Tom created the first ever set of scores that were carefully constructed to lead the players onward and upward to the top grade two corps. By simplifying the grade two scores, he was able to create the perfect developmental scores that were both challenging and fun without the loss of musical effect. When the band was upgraded to grade one, Tom simply expanded his system to now include every level from beginner through to the top of grade one.
This was a breakthrough in compositions for developing drummers and over the years, Tom’s system of scores have been a cornerstone in the Boghall system and gone on to assist thousands of drummers on their drumming journey. Not only did he now have three different level scores for each tune, these scores could all be played simultaneously! Yes, he had created a method of writing scores to suit each level of player from entry level right through to the world champion grade one corps that allowed every drummer to play simultaneously together and develop up through the ranks. In the 1990’s, Tom’s son Gordon began composing scores and has now contributed a number of scores to the system.
SOSN is the resulting drumming book that is a compilation of 90 of these carefully crafted scores by the masterful father and son team ready for you to start learning. The strategy is to learn the elementary version of all the scores first and gain a firm grasp of the technique and timing that is required at this level. Then move onto the intermediate versions of the scores while holding onto the qualities of proper execution and timing developed in the elementary stage. Finally, you can then go on and challenge yourself to learn all the advanced versions. Each step requires a lot of hard work but with persistence and patience, you will undoubtedly succeed in playing all the scores in this book.
SOSN is a unique drumming book in that it is a training course in itself. SOSN enables you to teach yourself as you go. It is an excellent investment into your development and we at DrummingMad believe to be a must for every snare drummer on the planet. So much so that we publish it.

Hi Dean, I’ve had Something Old Something New for some years now in it’s original format, our band has not played any of the tunes in the book unfortunately so I have used bits and pieces and some 2 bar phrases from various setting to use in settings I’ve written for the drum corps, it has helped to develop some variety to our settings. Love the audio’s.
